Happy 21st Birthday ...
2019 - 2020 did not quite go as planned ...

It all started off beautifully with an incredible Nutcracker 2019 season ... A rare winter visit from Mr. Valery Lantratov ... followed by acceptances to summer intensives for an incredible group of dancers ...
But by the middle of March, I was wondering if the studio would survive in the midst of a pandemic and I found myself spending most of my teaching time reminding my dancers that we will stick together .. we will get through this and all the while, they were losing out on some of the best experiences and adventures of our years. It appeared that I would spend the next several months virtually wiping tears (for my students and myself) and delivering one piece of bad news after another. My teachers and my parents put up the most incredible support net for me .. a level of support I never imagined I would ever need in my 20 years of directing this little studio home and, and, magically we were able to begin to filter in students one by one. Seeing the faces of my students as they trickled back in to the studio was never sweeter. Then, as if I do have a Guardian Angel on my shoulder, we were able to host our summer intensive week with Mr. Valery Lantratov and Laura Lee ... a couple of weeks late but it HAPPENED! Classes were taught in person and we all walked away happy and SAFE!

Now it appears that this tiny little studio has survived this ... not 100% out of the woods yet ... but thankfully my extra career has allowed me to extend my teachers' employment into June (which never happens) and rent has been kept up through July. August will be paid without hesitation. Mr. Lantratov was a bigger expense than usual because I wasn't able to invite other students from other schools but my work as a nurse pays off. I did not apply for any small business assistance because I am able to work and, trust me, I haven't been sitting around much. The studio took a pretty big hit financially but I expected it and I ABSOLUTELY understand those who chose to wait this out altogether. I reminded myself a few times throughout this ordeal that I built this once. Nine years in, I almost shut it down because I didn't build it well enough. That Guardian Angel, I mentioned above ... she slapped me upside the head and reminded me I am not much of a quitter so I started again. It looks like another rebuilding year is upon me this fall. The best things in life are worth working for.

We still have some battles ahead ...

1. I am working to secure a way to put Alice in Wonderland out there ...
2. Nutcracker season hangs in the balance ... Creativity on my part will likely have to prevail ..
3. Studio schedules may be a challenge but after what I've just described above, we will be okay.
4. There is always a threat of another shut down, I suppose, but again ... we did this once .. we will do it again.

Here's to 2020 - 2021 ...

If there's one positive that came out of this, I have witnessed the tenacity of the world's dance community ....
While athletic events were halted, dancers proved, once again, and without a shadow of a doubt that the world needs the arts. Dancers all over the world KEPT GOING. We danced the entire time. Classes were taught every night and Saturdays continued for us. I added classes. Students took MORE classes. We stayed together ... just like I promised we would.

Now ... can we just get back to what we LOVE doing the most?!!

With love to all ....
