Founded in 1999 by Missy Belcher Floyd
Shenandoah Academy of Dance in the News!
In early April, Missy decided to go out on a limb and try to win a grant. Not just any grant ... this grant was how she would improve and expand the studio. Intuit, the company that brings us TurboTax, Quickbooks, GoPayment among many other business productions, posted their "Small Business Growing Strong Campaign" .... and so the story began.

The campaign asked the small business owner to "make a wish" and post it, share it to all and promote it as best they could. Missy's wish: a new floor for her students. A new floor that would keep her students dancing strong and healthy. Here's how it went:

My ballet studio, located in Buena Vista, Virginia, has been in business since 1999. I strive to continue to give this under served community the finest dance training available. We have been dancing on the same flooring surface since 1999. It would be amazing to be able to replace the floor. A grant of this size would be perfect since my family and I would lay the floor ourselves leaving just the expenses of the actual materials. Since the studio tuition simply pays the rent, this grant would be a God send to my students!

Academy Adds New Instructor of Classical Ballet

The Shenandoah Academy of Dance located in Buena Vista and under the direction of Missy Belcher Floyd, is pleased to announce the addition of Tina McCann as instructor of Intermediate / Advanced Ballet.

McCann, a native Californian, began her classical ballet training at the age of nine in Los Angeles under Mahri Coshever formerly of the Sadler’s Wells / Royal Ballet. McCann also studied and danced with Evelyn LeMone’s Pasadena Dance Theater and at the Los Angeles Ballet with renowned instructor and Los Angeles Ballet Mistress Irina Kosmovksa. She received additional training with other notable instructors such as Stanley Holden, formerly of the Royal Ballet, and Todd Bolender, formerly of the New York City Ballet and director of the Kansas City Ballet. Her performing career includes roles in “The Nutcracker” as well as “Blue Bird”. She danced other soloist roles and was the inspiration for a pas de deux choreographed for her called Waltz of The Vampire set to music from the opera “La Traviata”.

After a hiatus from the ballet world, McCann relocated to Rockbridge County. She returned to the world of classical ballet at the former Lexington School of Dance under the direction of Sherri Lamont. She studied with Kristen Burgon Whittaker and performed with the Rockbridge Ballet. In the fall of 2011, McCann moved her studies over to the Shenandoah Academy of Dance under Floyd’s direction and was immediately invited to dance with Floyd’s ballet company, Shenandoah Ballet. She has performed soloist roles in “The Nutcracker” including Dew Drop, Marzipan and Spanish and “Prayer” in Floyd’s 2012 production of “Coppelia”. In the spring of 2013, Floyd created the role of “The White Rabbit” in Shenandoah Ballet’s premiere production of “Alice in Wonderland”. McCann will continue her studies with Floyd and other guest teachers at the Academy and will continue as a principal performer with Shenandoah Ballet.

McCann is slated to teach at the Intermediate / Advanced level of ballet along with Floyd to offer students at the Academy additional professional influence for their training.
